The Strip in Las Vegas! If you haven’t been there, you’ve at least heard about it. This is the city that never sleeps, or so they say. Any day of the week, all year long, you can be sure that the Strip is inundated with masses of people from out of town. It is here you’ll find plenty of entertainment and fun all up and down the Strip.
But, what do the residents of Las Vegas do for entertainment and fun? Do they walk the infamous Strip every day? Or is there more to Las Vegas than travel brochures talk about? Well, even the residents of Las Vegas like to get their gambling fix just like us tourists. And, just like anywhere else in this country, the residents of Las Vegas will provide tour guide services of sorts for guests from out of town.
But the Strip isn’t all that Las Vegas has to offer. There is so much more to this city and any local will be glad, and probably relieved, to show you around if you asked. Let’s take a look at a few things that Las Vegas has to offer:
This is the Spring Mountain range, referred to as the Humboldt-Tioyabe National Forest officially. Over 10,000 feet, it is the uppermost peak of the mountain range. It is Las Vegas’ western boundary and is where the locals go to get away, especially during the summer months.
The roadways of this mountain are over 8,000 feet up and will take you to where you can hike or go rock climbing, and it provides a spectacular view of wildflowers. There are also camping areas, horseback riding, mountain biking, and just every day picnicking enjoyed here. This mountain isn’t just for summer enjoyment either! Locals enjoy the winter activities that Mt. Charleston has to offer too. The facilities are limited, but you’ll find skiing and snowboarding about other things when this mountain is covered in snow.
Among the limited facilities is a lodge and resort/spa that offer world-class accommodations. Both facilities have restaurants for your dining pleasure, but you won’t find any convenience stores, gas stations, or grocery stores. So stock up before you head up with your favorite beverages, food and plenty of gas. Spring Mountains Recreation Area is found at 4701 North Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89130-2301. Call them at 702-515-5400 to book your lodging or visit their website.
The locals call it Red Rock, but officially it is called Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Located on Las Vegas west side as well and on Mt. Charleston’s south, it gives you the Mojave Desert look. A world-renowned area that offers multitudes of trails of sandstone for hiking and rock climbing, you’ll see right away why the locals love this area.
There is a thirteen-mile loop drive that will take you this beautiful scenic area where you’ll find rock formations like you won’t see anywhere else – Mother Nature at her finest. There are plenty of roadways for biking and running too. Or spend the day picnicking and horseback riding to get a feel for the “real west”.
Red Rock’s visitor’s center has all kinds of exhibits where volunteers can answer your questions. The Conservation Area doesn’t have any restaurants within it, but there is a suburban area nearby that is bustling with ample types of facilities. You will find Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area at 1000 Scenic Loop Drive Las Vegas, NV 89161. You can call them at 702-515-5367 or visit their website to get more information.
Casinos Off The Strip
The Strip isn’t all Las Vegas has to offer. Just like your hometown, there are churches and schools. There are businesses, strip malls, and stores. But it wouldn’t Las Vegas if there weren’t casinos scattered around and about the suburbs too.
Most of the casinos that locals frequent offer amenities like the ones you will find down the Strip. But they are usually located in bowling centers, ice skating rinks, movie theaters, and even in children’s centers. A local resident will grab dinner out at a local restaurant, take in a current movie, then spend some time on a blackjack table.
